Rivers In Jammu And Kashmir

IMPORTANT RIVERS


JHELUM:

    The Jhelum Is the most important waterway of the Kashmir valley. It can be called as Lifeline of Kashmir Valley. It is also called as Veth locally. 

Jhelum Originates from a spring called as Verinag. A large number of tributaries join the Jhelum. It ultimately converges with Chenab in Punjab Province of Pakistan.
The total length of Jhelum is 774 Kms whereas its total length in valley of Kashmir is 177 km


Tributaries of Jhelum: Sandran river, Bringi river, Arapath, Lidder, Rambiara,  Vishow, Watlara, Arapal, Dudh ganga, Nallah Sindh, Pohru. 


RAVI: 

 The river Ravi Originates in Mighty Himalayas in the Multhan tehsil of Kangra  district of Himachal Pradesh and leaves the Himalayas at Basoli. Ravi rives flows around 80Km before entering the Punjab Province of Pakistan. The Ravi river ultimately joins the Mighty Chenab in Punjab province in Pakistan near Ahmadpur sial. Total length of Ravi is 725 Km


TAWI:   

The Tawi river originates from Kailash Kund spring at Soej Hills in Baderwa.  It flows through chenani,  Udampur, and passes through the City of Jammu before merging with Chenab at Rambhir Singh Pora and then Entering Pakistan. 

Total length of Tawi is 141Km


INDUS :   

It transverse from China, India and Pakistan before emptying in Arabian sea near the Port City of Karachi, Pakistan. 
Total length of Indus river is 3180 Km
Tributaries: Zanaskar river, Suru river, Soan River, Luni river, Ghaggar-Hakra riverriver,  Hunza river, Gilgit river, Swat river, Shyok river, Kabul river, kunar river, kurram River. 

The Indus is another important river. It originates from lake Manasarovar in Tibet, Republic of China. 


KISHANGANGA:  

The Kishanganga river originates from Krishansar Lake at Sonamarg. 

The Kishanganga or the Neelam river flows through the Kashmir region and enters Pakistan in the Gurez sector  of Line Of Control (LOC). It meets Jhelum river North of Muzzafarabad. 
Total length is 245 Km


DODA:

The Doda river originates from the Drang Drung glacier of the Pensi La.  It flows through the region of Ladakh. The river flows into Padum valley and joins Tsarap river to form river Zanskar. 
Total length is 79 Km


CHENAB:

The Chenab river rises in the Himalayan contour of Lahaul and Spiti. It is formed from the confluence of two rivers Chandra and Bhaga in the Lahaul and Spiti region of Himachal Pradesh. In Jammu and Kashmir it flows through Kishtwar, Doda, Ramban,  Reasi and Jammu district Before entering Pakistan. The Mighty Chenab ultimately empties into Satluj river in Pakistan. 

It was also called as Asikni and chandrabhaga in earlier times. 
Length of Chenab is Approximately 1200 Km
